5 Awesome Things to Do in Buckinghamshire

July 8, 2018 by Jason B.

The county of Buckinghamshire is sure to provide you with lots of inspiration for many exciting days out, with its historic houses and stunning countryside. Located right on the doorstop of London, the south of Buckinghamshire is home to the towns of High Wycombe, Amersham and Marlow and towards the north of the county is the beautiful Aylesbury Vale with its traditional country villages, enchanting market towns and stunning country houses. Dotted around the villages and countryside are many charming country inns, many of which provide great destinations to visit on their own. If you are planning a trip to Buckinghamshire, we’ve listed five of the most awesome places to visit.

Claydon House

The home of the Venney family

for almost 400 years, today this historic house, gardens, parkland, courtyard and church are open to the general public for viewing. A visit to Clayton hosts plenty to do for all the family in one of the most tranquil of countryside settings. The 18th Century courtyard has a café and shop, and there are opportunities to explore the house and its grounds.

Go Ape Black Park

A tree-top adventure with an exciting course of rope bridges, monkey swings and crossings set high above the forest floor, Go Ape is set in 530 acres of stunning woodland around a centre piece lake in Black Park Country Park located near Slough. Kids over the age of ten will love taking to the trees to tackle the high wires, tricky crossings and zip wires.

Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital

The peaceful grounds of Tiggywinkles Wildlife Hospital

are home to a number of different residents, including foxes, water birds, hedgehogs, deer, badgers and tortoises. New to the centre are the Red Kite flight aviaries which give you the opportunity to see the majestic birds up close. During the local school holidays there are a number of activities and animal talks for children.

Chiltern Open Air Museum

If you’re looking for somewhere awesome to go with your kids, why not take them time travelling at the Chiltern Open Air Museum. The museum is home to a thrilling hands-on journey through two thousand years of living history which has been captured perfectly through the range of exciting events in the museum’s programme and the collection of genuine historic buildings.

Buckinghamshire Railway Centre

Open from Easter until the end of October, the Buckinghamshire Railway Centre

is a great opportunity to revisit the golden age of steam at one of the UK’s largest railway collections. A visit to the Centre will allow you to take a ride on one of the steam hauled passenger trains and miniature railway, which run during school holidays, weekends and bank holidays. Historic exhibits of locomotives can be found in the Visitor Centre, along with a restaurant and gift shop. Look out for the regular transport themed weekend events and special children’s visits from Thomas and Friends and Santa Steamings.

If you’re planning a trip to visit all or some of these awesome places, why not visit IHG.com
