It’s a funny thing I moved to London just to witness the Royal Wedding first hand. Kidding. Honestly, the royal wedding atmosphere excited me but before the big day I did very little planning. How would I celebrate the big day?
After sleeping in till 10 I turned on the telly and realized I felt some emotion toward this. For a few hours I worked while monitoring the TV. A few minutes of research showed that the best and only place left to celebrate the royal wedding was Hyde Park. Apparently the gathering in Hyde Park was only available to the first 200,000 folk but CNN actually said there were 1 million people gathered in Hyde Park. Let me tell you that it was really packed.
My girlfriend and I took the tube from the empty White City station down to a packed station nearest to Hyde Park. Upon entering the park we saw many Prince William and Kate lookalikes.
The average British folk were dressed in the spirit of the day. As corny as the whole experience was for many the atmosphere was joyous. Being around millions of Brits and foreigners celebrating the wedding, or anything in general, is a great experience.
The official program read,
“We are both so delighted that you are able to join us in celebrating what we hope will be one of the happiest days of our lives. The affection shown to us by so many people during our engagement has been incredibly moving, and has touched us both deeply. We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone most sincerely for their kindness.”
Signed by both; William and Catherine
News reporters were all around capturing history.
Hyde park was set up with thousands of cops wearing those silly caps, a few big TV screens, food vendors, and people wearing some of the zaniest attire.
After port-o-potty stop and overpriced burgers on the grass we dodged the festive people to find a place on the grass. Just a fashion show our heads kept bobbing left and right as we pointed out one silly person after another.
We claimed a spot next to a sleeping Ernest Hemingway lookalike and his son. Hungover or tired?
To our left stood a dancing bride and her friend.
Soon enough the military jets flew overhead and the crowd roared.
Quiet returned and the cute group of older ladies continued to sip their tea, eat their biscuits, and check their cell phones.
The dancing bride and I drinking Cider.
Besides dancing brides their were cross-dressing groups of brides.
I imagine I could have made a killing selling royal wedding themed t-shirts like these guys are wearing.
It was a family event.
While these photos are from a park I need to be clear that the British are very proper and dress this way everyday.
Cute, eh?
After hours of drinking cider and the couple already married we left the park to walk the streets. Below is my favorite photo of the day.
The retail stores took full advantage of the royal wedding.
And I will end this photo essay like so.
