In recent years, vaping has seen massive growth in its popularity. I made the switch to save money which will go towards funding more international excursions.
Since I made the switch, I’ve been feeling a lot healthier which is to be expected, seeing as and a recent study supported by the NHS showed that vaping can significantly reduce the exposure to toxic chemicals. Therefore, mitigating a large portion of the dangers associated with smoking.
However, rules regarding vaping are constantly changing, it’s hard to know where you stand and this can make the idea of travelling with your vape seem a little daunting.
I’ve been flying quite regularly with my vape, but it has its challenges when you’ve not sure of the specific rules and regulations that you need to know to take your e-cigarette on the plane. So, I put together this guide to share what I now know. I aim to clear up some of the common misconceptions regarding air travel and e-liquids as well as to suggest some best practises for carrying your equipment when travelling.
Commonly asked questions
If you have a scheduled flight and you are looking to travel with your vaporiser, you might have a couple of questions. Here are our most commonly asked questions, alongside our expert’s opinions:
What e-liquid equipment might I need when flying?
If you’re going to be away from your usual location for some time, it’s always advised to stock up a little extra on the core essentials to avoid getting caught short. Depending on where you’re going, you may want to avoid sampling the local e-liquids. In my experience, US made liquids are by far the best quality.
Remember to pack well in advance and to include some extra e-liquid as well as some space replacement coils, because sourcing replacement parts whilst abroad can be a bit of a hassle.
Are you able to carry your e-cigarette on board with you whilst you fly?
Generally speaking – yes. In fact, most airlines insist you carry the gear in your hand luggage because of battery safety. So, you can take your e-cigarette with you on the plane but that doesn’t mean you can vape it! I assure you, you can’t do that.
Should your e-cigarette be stored in the hold or carried on with you as hand luggage?
Due to the recent stories that involve the overheating, and exploding of battery-operated devices, it is no-longer possible to store your battery-operated vapes in the hold due to the risk of the devices overheating and starting a fire.
Instead, battery-powered vaping devices (including e-cigarettes, vape pens & all other electrically powered nicotine devices must be checked in your hand luggage, and carried with you in the cabin.
Detect the tank from the mod, and store the tank in your clear plastic bag along with your toiletries. Make sure your mod is switched off – you don’t want the button to be squished held down in your bag.
Are there any restrictions for carrying e-liquids on-board my flight?
Because most airlines have restrictions which cover your ability to carry liquids when flying, it’s quite common that your e-liquids and vape will be subject to a security inspection.
To ensure this runs as smooth as possible, it is strongly advised to pack your liquids & clearomizers in two separate, transparent plastic bags. I recommend wrapping it in toilet roll so A) the glass doesn’t get damaged and B) it will soak any excess liquid that may leak.
How can you avoid your tank from leaking on the plane?
When you fly, it is advised to bring an empty spare tank. Nevertheless, if you do travel with a tank loaded with e-liquid, many recommend storing the tank upside down during take-off to prevent any awkward spills. By holding it upside down, the pressure is released in such a way that it doesn’t cause a problem. This is subject to what tank you use! It’s works on my Kangertech.
What is the best way to travel with e-liquid juice bottles?
Bottle of e-liquid juice will also expand during take-off caused by the increase in air pressure. The best way to mitigate any damage is to fly with bottles that are only half filled, so that the juice has room to expand during the flight. It can’t hurt to try suck out a bit of air using the pipette as well.
Will using an e-cigarette on an airplane go unnoticed?
If you have thought about joining the ‘mile-high’ vape club, reconsider your options as currently no airlines allow for the use of e-cigarettes whilst flying and your vaping may set off the in-cabin smoke alarms which can have serious consequences.
Blowing big clouds mid-flight has the potential to alarm and cause frustration to other passengers. Even if you are using a modern device such as the MyJet, which produces minimal vapour and could potentially, go undetected, it’s really not worth the hassle.
