As the weeks start to disappear in the run-up to your cruise it’s a good idea to start getting a list of things you want and need to bring with you. Because many of the things you’ll need are usually provided on board, this isn’t like packing for a normal holiday, but there are some essentials you really shouldn’t forget. Below is a list of things you might not have thought of and if you had thought of them, use this as a checklist before you set off.
1. Sun Cream
Don’t forget your sun cream. As you’re going to be on the ship for the duration of your trip, it’s worth thinking about what you might not be able to purchase easily on board. Whether you’re in the pool or sunbathing on deck, make sure your skin is well-protected
.
2. A Good Book
While it’s true that modern cruise ships have almost every kind of entertainment you can think of, it’s worth bringing something along to read for when you fancy some ‘me time’. One of the best ways to find some peace on a ship is to lose yourself in a good book.
3. Different Currencies
On many cruises you’ll be making stops at various ports of call throughout your trip. Make a note of which destinations you’ll be visiting and remember that in all likelihood they’ll require different currencies. Before you travel visit an exchange bureau and make sure you’ve plenty of money in each currency for when you make port.
4. A Camera
Bringing a camera on-board is an excellent idea if you want to capture all of your favourite moments along the way. This is especially important if you’re stopping at destinations like Egypt where you can see the Great Pyramids, as you want to be able to relive the experience when you get home. There are some excellent cruise itineraries that include Egypt as a port of call – check out sites like Thomson.co.uk

5. First Aid Kit
The first aid and health services on cruise ships are more than adequate. There are, however, occasions when a small cut or scrape can be dealt with on your own. For this you’ll need to bring a basic first aid kit with all the essentials such as plasters, antiseptic wipes, bandages and scissors. Prepare well and avoid discomfort.
6. Binoculars
When you’re on a ship and land is far away a pair of good binoculars can be surprisingly good fun. Peering from the top deck towards the distant land, or up to the moon and stars in a night sky while out at sea can be a truly magical experience if you’ve got the right tools for the job.
7. Documentation
Bringing the right documentation with you is possibly the most crucial item on this list. Don’t forget that just because you’re on a boat, doesn’t mean you’re not subject to international rules and regulations. You don’t want to be left behind on board when everyone else is off exploring the next port of call.
