I would never ordinary watch a soccer football match. I do not care for watching sports much, let alone football. I can say my only weakness is basketball. Not that I can actually play well. But lots of people do like football.
That’s how I wound up watching the Champions League final with a handful of Spaniards and Colombians in their home in London. It was Manchester United versus Barca this past June. It was a huge match played a stone’s throw away in Wembley stadium. We could hear the crowds noise from their home. And the tube was jammed pack for a reason. Spain against England. Who would win?
To be honest I was most excited for the post game celebrations, regardless of who would win. I know London would be absolutely mental throughout if Manchester U won. But if Barcelona beat them we could still find some pockets of London to celebrate. Either way I would celebrate.
I passed around the bottle of Smirnoff mixed with OJ that I had smuggled like a hobo on the tube taking the occasional gulp. Smirnoff has always lead to good times
. Its a trustworthy beverage.
I can not sat I paid much attention to the TV set. Instead I practiced my Spanish with the other half who were clearly not so into the game either. I BS’s about Colombia for a while which is always a fun topic of conversation in my view.
The game was not very competitive either. Barcelona beat Manchester pretty handily, three to one. At least we found the Spaniard minority who were ecstatic with the result. I did not need to persuade anyone that we ought to go celebrate either. We rode the tube down to Trafalgar square minus an empty bottle.
Our reward?
Check out the video to see the reaction of the Barcelona fans. It was just like the time the streets poured with Philadelphia Phillies fans when I studied in Pittsburgh. Wrong city. No problem.
