Facebook Travel App Review

September 19, 2019 by Jason B.

I found this weird little app today. Halifax Holiday Matchmaker

is a facebook App that purportedly can find the perfect vacation destination tailored to you by accessing your facebook data. I was curious what place my facebook says I long for, and I was wondering if maybe there was some place that I wanted to go more than others that I wasn’t even aware of, that I was pining for on a subconscious level. So I downloaded the App, and after a second or two I was told in big block letters that I was a 99% match to San Francisco.

Why San Francisco? I have no way of knowing, because Halifax doesn’t tell you what the criteria is. Needless to say, of all the travel destinations in the world, I felt a little self-conscious that my facebook profile seemed to imply that the gay capital of America was where I was a 99% match. I scrolled down, past the currency rates, past what a “tenner” could get me in San Francisco, and I saw that my new App suggested I “embrace my inner fashionista” and stay “in this trendy hotel.” Not sure how my facebook pictures are suggesting I would be interested in anything fashion related, as all pictures of me on facebook show me wearing the same three shirts. Maybe the app was suggesting I should start caring about fashion. Did the app not like the way I dress?

At the bottom of the results page, you can see a list of other cities to click on and discover what percentage of a match you are with that city. It turns out I am a 70-74% match with a few interesting places in the world. But I am not at liberty to reveal them. Except for San Francisco, where only 1 percent of me will get tired of all the hills, and 99% will just be fabulous.
