Cyprus Makes My Holiday Shortlist

I wrote a while ago about my desire to go on a holiday. The feedback I have been given by people talking about their amazing holidays to Cyprus has definitely put it on my shortlist. The lack of a visa requirement for US citizens to enter the south is always a plus – I have had more than my fill of entering ridiculous amounts of information into tiny spaces on forms.

My friend Jake sent me his photos of the archaeological sites and historical structures that he saw on his trip. While the Venetian walls of Nicosia look quite interesting, Hamam Omerye, a Turkish baths dating from the 14^th century looks wonderful. I could certainly see myself being pampered with some of the treatments on offer or just indulging in the bathing ritual and pretending I’m a traveler in the Middle Ages.

I have to say I’m intrigued by the line that divides the island into Greek and Turkish rule, especially where it cuts the capital city in half. Apparently it’s easy enough to cross the border from the south and it would be fascinating to see how a divided capital city functions.

Sharon’s pictures of exquisitely beautiful beaches with plenty of opportunities for scuba diving and snorkeling are also a draw. If I want some crazy late-night clubbing, then Anthony’s enthusiastic recommendation of Ayia Napa will be hard to beat – apparently it’s “wicked cool and awesome.”

I still haven’t made up my mind on where to go, but to give Cyprus a fair shot and to inform my activities when I’m there I’m looking for more feedback and honest reviews. For those of you who have been on holidays to Cyprus, what are your personal must-see sights and must-do experiences?
