Train cemetery? Yes, way back when Uyuni was a booming town the British came in to build a train line. They started in the late 1800’s and as you can see there is not much left of it. Now it is simply a tourist attraction worth a few minutes unless you are fascinated by creepy old things.
You see over a century ago the former Bolivian president, Aniceto Arce, had the line built to become a distribution hub for the trains carrying mineral on their way to the Pacific Ocean ports. At that time Bolivia was not a landlocked country like it is today. The president thought that with a good transport system, Bolivia’s economy could really grow.
Apparently he did not account for the locals. The Aymara people considered it an intrusion. They tried their best to stop the line and by the 1940’s they succeeded mostly because the mine had little left to exploit. As you can see these trains have been abandoned since then.
